The Hollows’ Hybrids and Humvees
by Janice Martin
Recently the media claimed that the war in Iraq and Afghanistan really haven’t affected most Americans’ daily lives, except for those with family currently serving in those countries. The golfers at Sandwich Hollows Golf Course would completely disagree with this statement for they have been involved with seeing that two local soldiers, one in Iraq, the other stationed in Afghanistan, get to practice their golf, a far cry from what these two young men do and see on a daily basis. This is a story that confirms that good still exists during adversity, that people are very giving, and that golf is definitely a life style.
It started over coffee at a local breakfast stop when the Sandwich Hollows Golf Course Director, John Johnson, asked Joe Balboni how his son Ross was doing while stationed in Iraq. Ross played at Sandwich Hollows all through high school and as a young adult. It seemed that most of the soldiers in Ross’ Green Beret Team play golf and were thinking that some of there down time could be put to good use on improving their games, but equipment and balls were needed. John was also aware that Police Chief Miller’s son, Captain Kevin Miller, was stationed in Afghanistan. Kevin not only played at Sandwich Hollows, but also was part of the summer crew all through high school and college. So, back at the golf course, John spoke to his staff and some of the members. Thus Sandwich Hollows Golf Course’s flags wave in Iraq and Afghanistan!
But it is not just about “a little bit of home” with the flags! Twenty-four dozen used range balls, numerous golf clubs donated by members or never claimed in lost & found, tees, gloves, golf magazines, and even personalized Sandwich Hollow bag tags have been sent, shipping paid for by staff donations. In turn, Ross and Kevin e-mail pictures showing how this wonderful gesture helps improve the morale of two fighting teams serving our country. On these makeshift driving ranges, putting areas, and maybe a hole or two, golf is alive and well!
Thanks to John Johnson, his staff, and the Sandwich Hollows members!
